Background of the study:
Family structures and dynamics are fundamental to the socialization and development of individuals. In Oron, family neglect—a phenomenon marked by inadequate parental guidance, emotional abandonment, and financial instability—has been increasingly linked to the emergence of criminal tendencies among youths (Edet, 2023). Research indicates that children who experience neglect are more susceptible to engaging in delinquent behavior due to a lack of positive role models and diminished emotional support (Inyang, 2024). The breakdown of traditional family systems, exacerbated by economic challenges and social disintegration, often leaves vulnerable individuals exposed to negative influences and criminal networks (Mbanefo, 2025). This study examines the correlation between family neglect and criminal behavior, drawing on sociological theories and empirical evidence from local communities. It aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how familial dysfunction contributes to the development of criminal tendencies and to identify potential intervention strategies. By synthesizing qualitative interviews, quantitative data, and existing literature, the study aspires to shed light on the critical role of family in shaping behavioral outcomes and to advocate for policies that strengthen family support systems.

Statement of the problem:
In Oron, the incidence of criminal behavior among youths has been linked to high levels of family neglect. The absence of proper parental guidance and emotional support creates an environment in which children are more likely to adopt deviant behaviors (Abasiubong, 2023). This neglect, compounded by socio-economic hardships, has led to increased vulnerability to criminal influences and involvement in illegal activities (Utibe, 2024). The resulting cycle of neglect and criminality poses a significant challenge to community stability and public safety. This study aims to explore the extent to which family neglect contributes to criminal tendencies, seeking to uncover the underlying factors and propose remedial measures (Nsikak, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the prevalence of family neglect in Oron.

  2. To assess the relationship between family neglect and youth criminality.

  3. To recommend interventions aimed at strengthening family support systems.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of family neglect in Oron?

  2. How does family neglect influence criminal tendencies among youths?

  3. What interventions can reduce the impact of family neglect on youth behavior?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Family neglect is significantly associated with increased youth criminality.

  2. Socio-economic hardships exacerbate the negative effects of family neglect.

  3. Strengthening family support systems will reduce the incidence of criminal behavior.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant because it addresses the critical issue of family neglect as a driver of criminal tendencies. Its findings will aid social policymakers and community leaders in designing family-centered interventions, ultimately contributing to a reduction in youth criminality and fostering stronger, more resilient communities (Edet, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to exploring the link between family neglect and criminal tendencies in Oron Local Government Area, focusing solely on familial and community dynamics.

Definitions of terms:

  • Family Neglect: The failure to provide adequate emotional, financial, or physical support to family members.

  • Criminal Tendencies: Propensities or predispositions toward engaging in illegal activities.

  • Interventions: Actions or programs designed to address and remediate social issues.
